What is a digital deal jacket?

A digital deal jacket is the complete, auditable record of a single car deal — the customer, the vehicle, the test drive, the credit pull, the F&I contracts, and every signature — stored digitally instead of in a paper folder.

The short version

A deal jacket is the folder a dealership keeps for each car sale. Historically it was a literal manila folder at the F&I desk that held the credit app, the test drive waiver, the bill of sale, the signed contracts, the OFAC check, and a photocopy of the buyer’s license. A digital deal jacketreplaces that folder with a structured electronic record.

What it contains

A modern digital deal jacket typically contains:

  • The customer’s verified identity (driver’s license parsed and cross-checked)
  • A timestamped test drive record with assigned salesperson and vehicle
  • The signed test drive agreement and TCPA consent
  • The credit application and credit bureau responses
  • OFAC and Red Flags Rule screening results
  • The desking work-up and approved terms
  • F&I menu selections and signed aftermarket contracts
  • The bill of sale, odometer disclosure, and title paperwork
  • The delivery checklist and signed delivery acknowledgement

Why it matters

Deal jackets are the system of record regulators, lenders, auditors, and lawyers look at when something goes wrong. A complete, well-organized deal jacket is the dealership’s best defense against Red Flags Rule findings, CARS Rule complaints, state dealer audits, lender chargebacks, and customer disputes.

Paper vs. digital

A paper deal jacket is lossy. Documents get misfiled, signatures get missed, photocopies fade, and reconstructing a record months later means pulling a folder out of a filing cabinet. A digital deal jacket is structured, searchable, time-stamped, and tied to verifiable identity data. Regulators increasingly expect the digital version.

How Test Drive Pro builds one

Every test drive in Test Drive Pro starts the deal jacket automatically. The BlinkID + DIVE Online ID check, the digital agreement, the TCPA consent, the timestamped drive, the assigned salesperson, and the vehicle all land in one record. When the customer converts, the deal jacket is already 50% built — F&I adds the credit, desking, menu, contracts, and delivery, and the jacket is closed.
